The Children’s Studio-Collaborative Creative Lab

Collaborated with Claire Li

Concept Overview

Introducing “The Children’s Studio-Collaborative creative lab to be included in MOMA. A auto-play screen will be displayed at the entry of the studio to educate parents how creativity can be evoked through engagement. This studio is to be located in the second floor of the museum, and is a see-through workshop for kids to work alone or collaboratively with materials available to them.

Statement of need

Learning requires engagement, and this engagement includes both behavioral and psychological engagements (Clark&Mayer, 2016, p.221).

We proposed that to make graphic designs for MoMA, as museums lovers, we found out that MoMA is lack of its young audience, like pre-k kids. As an artistic museum, the contents could be too abstract for young kids to understand. Many kids are not  interested in those art works, instead of that, they are more interested in making things, like handcrafts. Therefore, a creativity space could be very important. Whenever their parents want to have more relaxed times for themselves, they could have the kids to do some handworks at the studio. Motion graphic videos could take an important part here, we can put an LED board, and then put our video on there for parents and kids to know that we have kids creativity lab here.

Concept Description

This idea enhances learning through physical and cognitive engagements. The MOMA is designed to present and educate visitors knowledge/history related to modern arts. After visiting each floor, this video clip would have educational purpose for visitors to understand learning by constructing is essential.

This LED board that being displayed at the entry of the studio provides an entertaining and educating leisure time for parents and kids who have visited the arts to relax and learn.

Target Audience

Parents and their kids - parents who want to have more ‘self time’ and kids who love handworking.

Learning Goals

We’ll have professional instructors at the lab, providing all tools like colored paper, pen, wool, cardboard, etc. for kids to use and all for free. Kids could use their creativity to create their own handcrafts. The motion graphic video will interpret the brief introduction to kids how they can present arts through handworks.  Also, parents could use that time for themselves in the museum.

Learning Theory

  • Creating an artifact is essential for learning through the lens of Constructionism.

  • With Social Constructivism In an open space for children to learn together, allows them to share a common understanding of art.

  • Cultural Learning: kids from different backgrounds would have different perspectives of how they see the world and the arts. Therefore, their presentations could be various. That contributes the creativity lab a diverse place where involves multicultural works.
